Title: The image of the town of Šahy in the mirror of selected historical and historical-demographic sources

Abstract: The image of the town of Šahy in the mirror of the works of Nicolaus Istuanfius, Matthias Belius, Ignaz Aurelius Fessler, András Vályi, Elek Fényes and Samu Borovszky points out that the first written records in the preserved documents were mentioned the first half of  the 13th century and the history of the town was closely connected with the Hunt-Poznan  family or the local Premonstratensian convent. The activities of the Premonstratensian  monks, the gradual acquisition of various city rights and the increase in population during the High and Late Middle Ages strengthened the strategic importance of the town step by step. However, this positive trend disrupted the Ottoman invasion. Its devastating effects along with events of 1552 led to an escape of the inhabitants, to burning of the town or to relocation of the convent archives. The town has long been suffering from the negative effects of the Ottoman presence and the political or religious fragmentation of the Kingdom of Hungary, even after the expulsion of the Ottomans from the country. The 19th century contributed to the effective modernization of the town. As Šahy became the administrative center of the Hont county, new institutions and various associations were established and intellectual milieu was stimulated. However, the 19th century also had its downsides. Despite advancing health education and improving health care, the fight against infectious diseases has often been futile, causing people to experience family tragedies. This is evidenced by the information extracted from the registries used in the study in connection with the cholera pandemic.

Title: Special Features of German Ethnographic Research of German Speaking Lumberjacks – huncokars

Abstract: This study is devoted to the special features of the ethnographic research of German speaking lumberjacks – huncokars (pronounced hoont-so-cars) which took place from the 1920s to the 1940s and was conducted by researchers working in German and Sudeten German ethnographic organizations. At that time, the lay and expert public were increasingly interested in the living conditions, customs and traditions and culture of the German population that lived beyond the borders of the Weimar Republic and later the Third Reich. The huncokars were particularly interesting for researchers because of the fact that they lived apart from the majority (Slovak) population in forested regions of western Slovakia. They were an endogamous and ethnically closed community. The main goal of my study is to identify and analyze the most frequent topics of German and Sudeten German research related to the huncokar population.

Title: The language and ethnic identity of the Gorals in Upper Orava (on the example of Goral villages Novoť and Oravská Polhora)

Abstract: Language is frequently identified as one of the key ethnicity’s components. When it comes to researching ethnic minorities, researchers very often point their attention to the language itself. This study analyzes the relationship between identity and language of Goral people living near Polish borders. The research was carried out in two Goral villages called Novoť and Oravská Polhora. The primary group of respondents were young people from this  area. This research aims to resolve questions of ethno-identification and ethno-linguistic  situation such as: Do Goral people consider the Goral dialect to be their mother language? Do residents of the area consider themselves to be Gorals? Is the Goral dialect their sole ethno-identification characteristic?

Title: Živena´s survey from 1947. Old views in a new reality?

Abstract: The renewal of political and social life and the revival of women’s emancipation in the period of so-called semi-democracy were already being carried out under the state›s and new elites› intense control and supervision, especially the communist elites. This surveillance and control did not escape the women’s movement. After the war, the traditional women’s association Živena also resumed its activities. In the new conditions, it attempted to define its role and goals to face the challenges of the changing political reality of 1945-1948. During this period, the leaders of Živena conducted an extensive survey to gauge opinions on the ideas of the new role of the Slovak woman in society. The results reflected the views and attitudes of women in the post-war years and thus reflected the opinions of women’s emancipation in Slovakia.

Title: Demographic characteristics of fathers of childern born out of wedlock

Abstract: The increasing number of children born to unmarried mothers represents one of the most significant demographic trends in the developed countries. For a long time, Slovakia has been one of the places where fertility and childbearing have been closely linked to married life. However, over the past few decades, this connection has been gradually weakening, and Slovakia has been approaching the group of countries with a relatively intensive increase in the number of children born out of wedlock. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the percentage of children born out of wedlock in Slovakia has quadrupled, and currently stands at 40 %. Demographic research on this phenomenon understandably focuses on mothers. But what do we know about the fathers of children born this way? The Slovak Statistical Office has been tracking data on fathers of children born out of wedlock since 2011. Although this is a relatively short period of time in terms of demographic changes, this information makes it possible to complete the demographic characteristics of both parents and thus contributes to enriching the analysis of out-of-wedlock birth rates.
